Making the Team
A team meeting is held in the fall. After the first two weeks of practice, each athlete will be evaluated. Wrestle-offs will be held at the end of November and will continue as needed throughout the season.
Practice and Competition
Practice begins in November and is held weekdays from 3:30-6:00pm. Competition begins in December and the OHSAA State Tournament is held March 3-5, 2015.
Incoming Freshman Activities
Incoming freshmen will receive information regarding pre-season activities for wrestling upon acceptance to St. Francis DeSales HS. Freshmen are welcome to attend open mats in the off season which is a great opportunity for incoming ninth graders to be introduced to the high school system. Open Mats are held throughout the spring, summer, and fall
During pre-season, athletes not involved in a fall sport participate in a training and conditioning program including yoga, strength training, and running. The program is designed specifically for wrestlers to increase strength, speed and flexibility.
DeSales Athletics is known statewide as being a power from top to bottom in all sports. The Wrestling program began this tradition in the 60's and 70's and has continued on through the 90's and into the new millennium. DeSales wrestling has produced some of the top names in the sport, including Ohio's first four time State Champion, Mark Zimmer, Ohio State Football coach Luke Fickell, as well as current head coach Nick Preston. With dozens of State Champions, NCAA All-Americans and Olympic contenders DeSales continues to be a place in which athletes can learn to reach the top of the podium at any level.
The wrestling program is dedicated to exposing student-athletes to one of the best and oldest sports in human history, and in helping them reach their full potential mentally, physically, and spiritually.
